In a way, Phraynx was almost going through a similar phase as his brother, Thorax was in "The Times They Are A Changeling". Both were treated unfairly because of who they were (Thorax = too nice amongst sinister, Phraynx = too harsh amongst innocent), and both weren't trusted except for one person (Thorax = not trusted amongst ponies except Spike, Phraynx = not trust amongst his own pack except Thorax). However, their acceptance is different with a few minor details.

Thorax was accepted in a new life and family with the ponies, full well knowing he was shunned back home with the changeling hive. Where as with Phraynx, he was already welcomed in the pack, yet his fear was more so of not being accepted as well as shunned by his own kind. Like I said, a minor difference but quite an interesting one. Also, is it just me or do I get a Celestia & Luna vibe from these two brothers.

So many bad lessons are taught here.

1, being good means your weak and helpless.
2, An origonal character can't retain their image when they have a change of heart. You cant be who you are, you have to look a certain way.
3, sharing an emotional dilemma with others will get you laughed at.
4, blaming others for your failures is ok.

Just a terrible episode anyway I look at it.

WOW THIS IS TRAGICAL!

No one I know personally watches MLP so I never get to talk about it D: *insert forever alone meme here*

but on this magical internet place~ :giggle:

I was super disappointed with Starlight in this episode, she's usually one of my fave characters - I see her as an intelligent slightly-badass character but her idea to lure the monster to the front door was idiotic. Also she gave up on Pharynx way too fast - she spent what, a single afternoon with him?

I admit that I disagree that Pharynx was forced to conform - or at least, I don't think it should be looked at that way. He was destructive, threatening, and extremely disruptive. The other changelings had a problem with his attitude, not his appearance. So I don't think they were racists or conformists - they just didn't like an asshole always yelling at them and destroying what they were trying to build. And he may have stayed because he cared for the hive, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a complete jerk. A jerk with good intentions is still a pain in the butt.

But of course, that's just my opinion  I could elaborate further buuuut I don't want to write an essay XDD

Thorax created a Hippie Community. Hmmm... that explains all those "green" things they talk too much about.

Geeez

Originally I wanted to give this episode the same rating as you did, but after much consideration I gave it a D+, because To Change a Changeling put Starlight from the 'neutral' category into the 'just bad' one in my eyes. I'm so done with how crude her solutions for certain situations are.

I agree that under Thorax the changelings became pussies, but it still bothers me less than Starlight and her devilish witchcraft.

And yes, Trixie is a silly witch - but in a good sense. ^^ (Although she was way too annoying in this ep.)

Worst episode since the last one to feature Thorax. What a waste of a powerful kingdom as well.

I get the feeling that some of the royalists may had secretly defected from the hive in search for Queen Chrysalis, so as to breed a new coup de tete swarm

I really try not to dislike episodes, but this one was just... weird.

Changelings. Change-lings. Can change. But apparently not when they have to defend themselves, then they are just defenseless hippies...? Errrrr. Something just doesn't add up.

As long as that one key info for why they don't seem to be able to defend themselves is missing, the episode just seems weird to me. Weird weird weird.

Even though I like Thorax and the new Changeling design. And I wanna see fanart of that one groupleader-hippie changeling with Treehugger havin' some dope now.

I think it's safe to say they can. Wasn't there even a whole "group" regarding changing of changelings in the hive? Not to mention we saw Thorax change in his new form as well. Don't want to get into too much detail. Still changelings, still can change.

You're right it was a bit of a weird one. Obviously the show is focusing on other characters outside the main cast nowadays, but some of these 'other' episodes are questionable!

If I'm being honest, I really enjoyed Trixie and some other aspects of this, but it could have been better.

In my opinion, Pharynx should have stayed in the classic changeling form since it felt like it would be the best for his character...but nope

All I have to say is: If I was "free to choose" between giving up my identity, thoughts, and visage for a King so that he may rule unchallenged, or death.
I would choose death, no matter the means.

I mean, they could of had him stay in his normal form, but no. Only 'evil' changelings look like that.

Very, very, racist. -And seeing that they are written as 'good guys', and what they are doing is 'good', what does that tell you about the writers?

That they are (at least a little) xenophobic.
"You are only good if you look like this. If you don not, then you are evil." is the main message I got from this.

On thinking about this episode, my initial thoughts were that this was taking a swipe at the modern cultural idea that rather than work through disagreements by focusing on common ground, it's better to just brand your opponents as "wrong" or "no good" and then shun them from society. Yet...on thinking about it a bit more, I realized that might have been something else I was overlooking.

Pharynx found himself in a situation where he felt his society, one that came from a background he admired rather than hated like the others, had changed to the point where he was made to feel as if he no longer belonged in it. People who feel that way in real life usually respond by withdrawing and trying to form their own counter-culture. Now granted, Pharynx didn't have anyone else to do that with (unless he went going to go find Chrysalis...), but the point was made that he stuck around regardless, because no matter how much hive society had changed and how much he disagreed with it, even hated it, he still valued the well-being of the hive as a whole and considered that to be paramount. Even if none of the other Changelings appreciated it, he still felt it was his responsibility to defend them. Heck, he clearly thought Thorax was a coward and a weakling, and yet he still followed his orders.

To be honest, I really hated this episode. To start off, all of the changelings were really cringy to listen to/watch. Thorax's explanation of what the changelings where doing now (Crafts, Dancing, Plays, Artwork) just seems too.......weird to say the least. Pharynx is an okay character, but I wished they had more screen time with him. Also, the message is non-existent....WTF?! They always have a lession to give at the end. In the end, I give this episode a 3.5 out of 10. Also, Pharynx's transformation was nice on my eyes (no bright colors), but it was too soon.

Is it just me or are they focusing too much on the opinions of the fandom?  I mean, they did publish 'Fame and Misfortune' to make the point that people shouldn't be overtly critical, so it does feel a bit hypocritical here.

Well, that they shouldn't mock the show so much, such as with the 'sissyness' of the changeling designs.  People made it the butt of so many jokes, so they decided to make a representation of that in Pharynx; the 'anti-safe space' changeling.

I think throughout the whole thing Pharynx was just looking for acceptance. He secretly loves safe spaces and herbal tea.

Well, that's what they were going for.  I'm not saying the story wasn't bad (I liked it alot), but the fact that they made the changelings a bunch of sissies both in Triple Threat and To Change a Changling shows that the fans were right in their jokes.  This episode was an attempt to appease those fans by saying 'they can be tough too' through the changelings accepting Pharynx.  It's like "Ok, we get it.  You happy now?"

Meanwhile, Fame and Misfortune's message was "let us write our stories.  You're overly critical and are just causing problems.  Stop it.  Get help."
