Choice quote: "
Applejack. Rainbow Dash. The High Court of Equestria has summoned you here today to sentence you for your irresponsible behaviour which led to the death of one of your students, Yona the Yak, during a recent field trip. Your petty arguing, which you have been doing since Season 1 of Friendship is Magic, caused a canoe containing a number of young students in your care to capsize. Poor Yona, being unable to swim, sank to the bottom of the river and drowned. What do you have to say for yourselves?”

I enjoyed this episode quite a lot ^^ I love seeing RD and AJ’s rivalry and competitive nature still growing strong since “Fall Weather Friends”. :D

Similar to shyness, a person’s competitive side is quite hard to overcome, especially when one is really deep into it. These two will always butt heads whenever they’re placed in a scenario where one can best the other, I don’t think we’ll ever see thar rivalry overcome, but seeing their competitive nature continue on leaves me with joy.

P.S. Some say RD and/or AJ should have had some consequence, but I think Twilight should be the one to blame. She knew how competitive these two are as well as knew that this rivalry would get in the way of focusing on what they were actually supposed to do, but she went with it anyways and risked the danger the students were in.

I feel like all the adults need to take some of the blame for Yona's death. That cute little yak did not deserve to drown just because Applejack and Rainbow Dash were overflowing with hubris :@(

You seem to have liked this episode more than most people - there is a lot of negativity for this one!

I know, poor Yona :(

Yeah I really did have a blast with this episode, but I’m quite taken aback by the amount of negativity for this episode and most of their explanation for it isn’t really a good enough reason.

One good non-reason I’ve seen/heard is how RD & AJ’s rivalry/competitive nature was resolved in “Fall Weather Friends”; that is false. We’ve seen them continue this trend in other episodes in different seasons.

But they gave everyone a life jacket. I think bad luck was at fault there.

Taking kids who cannot swim - and admit this to you prior to boarding - onto a boat is grossly irresponsible :@)

Lol is this some attempt at contrarian review? Im pretty sure this episode will rival Princess Spike as the worst ever episode of not just S8 but entire MLP series. This is a perfect example of F writing

'Attempt'? I don't attempt things, I just do them :@)

And I've heard a lot of people saying this episode is crap but very few people articulating why. I'm willing to accept it's flawed if someone wants to make a robust argument with specific criticisms explaining how. Just saying 'This episode is one of the worst episodes' doesn't cut it.

Well most of my impression came from the reaction thread when streaming with /mlp/ and it was the first episode since Princess Spike that had 80% 1/10
I think most points could be summed up with
1. Stupid premise - Aj and Dash already tackled that issue in Fall Wather Friends
2. Twilights trophy doesnt make sense, prizes should be given for the hard work, not whether student like someone. It make Neigh Sayer look good with his codex and the premiere of the movie pointless.
3. Dash and Aj were painfull to watch, with everything going wrong being predictable
4. Dash and Aj almost let a barn crush the student, almost let student crush their heads on rocks and almost let Yona drown, everuthing for a stupid trophy. And for the school job they shoudnt even care about since they have their own careers.
5. None of them learned anything and entire episode was pointless waste of time with no clever dialogues or jokes. The new writer basically saw just first 13 episodes of S1 and tried to sopy Fall weather friends but with Student6 as addition.

additionally, using "everycreature" was very annoying, espceially since previous episodes featured "everyone" many times and even in this season.

Could the episode be seen as a deconstruction of the notion that anyone can be a teacher? View it as a means of highlighting that Rainbow Dash and Applejack's hubris leads to the death of infants. But there is no punishment, for they are friends with a princess, who blindly looks the other way whenever they commit homicide.

Episode is an example that Haber shoudn't be a story editor as he allows writers who don't watch the show to write episodes.

Not a huge fan. Aj and RD were so flat in this episode, even as a kid it would've gone on my nerves!

While I liked the episode, relative to the rest of the series I'd probably have given it a much lower score... it felt like another case of the writers not knowing how to write a story without giving the Mane Six amnesia, which always bugs me.  The fact that in this case, as you point out, it would have resulted in a yak drowning had there not been a changeling and a himerponygrif-whatever the hell I'm supposed to call those just makes it worse :-p.

That said, I will say the kids themselves were, as they often are, adorable.  So the episode was still a fun watch.

It's the issue with having many different writers - everyone will characterise the cast in different ways :@(

Well, to start on a positive, I’m glad that the young 6 got to shine(I be it a little bit) after 7 freaking episodes! I wish there was more of them. But! AJ and RD were really grinding my gears in the shut the frick up you stupid ponies! I get it a call back to season 1, but that was 9 seasons ago. Not to mention, they were rewarded for screwing everything up? What kind of a resolution is that?!

Okay, what exactly made you give this thing a B-? This thing is hot garbage and possibly one of the worst episodes of the series. How does this episode get a B-? It deserves to be a D- or lower.

Where do I begin with this episode? The plot is idiotic. Nothing about this episode was interesting at all. The characterization is deplorable for Applejack and Rainbow Dash. I know they're competitive, but the fact they put the students in constant danger (including Yona who nearly drowns and they don't act to save her) is some of the worst portrayal for both AJ and RD. The comedy is weak with few good jokes. There's no moral for AJ and RD to learn or anything to imply they learned anything at all. The episode itself has nothing going for itself, nothing to take away from it, and feels like a massive waste of time. Why does this episode exist?

Interesting to hear your views. Was it a new writer? I don't know who is scripting the show now. Yona, sadly, perished, though her Weird Ghost will at least serve as a reminder of Applejack and Rainbow Dash's hubris.

Because Applejack and RD are the idiots here. Obsession with competition only leads to downfall all because Fluttershy is teacher of the month.

B-

You were way too kind to this episode.

Applejack and Rainbow Dash just can never stop competing with each other. The episode was weak, even though they were supposed to represent the efficiency of team work, they pretty much just represented the opposite of it. This episode was kinda similar to "Fall Weather Friends" because just like in there the main objective for Rainbow Dash and Applejack in this episode was just to show off who's the better. The whole episode felt really childish with all the "I'm better than you" vibes and it felt like if Rainbow Dash and Applejack never learned their lesson from "Fall Weather Friends" and "Buckball Season". This episode certainly has to be one of the weakest episode in the season and it's such a shame because after a great episode we get a weaker episode and after that we get an even weaker one. I do not even know what else I can say about this episode. It's just, eh. I'm not even sure if I can mention anything that was relatively good about this episode.

Episode score: 5/10 (Meh)

So far we have:

Episode 1&2 "School Daze" - 8/10
Episode 3 "Maud Couple" - 6/10
Episode 4 "Fake It 'till You Make It" - 6/10
Episode 5 "Grannies Gone Wild" - 7.5/10
Episode 6 "Surf and/or Turf" - 8/10
Episode 7 "Horse Play" - 9.5/10
Episode 8 "Parent Map" - 7/10
Episode 9 "Non Compete Clause" - 5/10

This episode has to be the worst episode in season 8 so far and I hope it will stay like that because I don't want to see a weaker episode than this.

I thought it was a nice throwback to Season 1, where Applejack and Rainbow Dash had a rivalry. Only this time, Yona perished, which was a shame, but perhaps a necessary sacrifice.

The whole AppleDash rivalry is just getting old and cringy in my opinion. In season 1 it was okay, but in season 8 it's just no.

This is as big of a stinker as the previous episode. It says a whole LOT that the Young Six were a MILLION TIMES more mature than their own teachers, Rainbow Dash and AJ never get punished or learn from their immature antics, and this is basically Fall Weather Friends done wrong.
